What is Hearts & Hammers?
Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers, serving eligible homeowners within the Coupeville School District area of Whidbey Island, Washington State, is an annual one-day blitz to repair and rehabilitate the homes of those physically or financially unable to do the work themselves. Central Whidbey Hearts and Hammers began in 2009 under the kind sponsorship of South Whidbey Hearts and Hammers. We are now an independent, non-profit organization supported by volunteer contributions from the community
What repairs are done?
We do whatever repairs and renovations are possible within the scope of a one-day work party, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, plastering, weatherization, heavy cleaning, roofing, yard cleanup and trash removal.
Who pays for Hearts & Hammers repairs?
There is no charge to the homeowners for labor or materials. Costs are covered by grants and donations from foundations, corporations, service organizations, churches and individuals; by fundraising events; and by in-kind donations of labor and materials.
How are Hearts & Hammers homes selected?
We get suggestions from churches, senior services and other community organizations, home health care, medical professionals, relatives and neighbors . Homeowners may also apply directly. Work assessment teams visit proposed sites to determine needs and see if the work is within our financial and time constraints. Priority is given to health and safety issues. Final selections are approved by the Hearts & Hammers Board.
Who can volunteer?
We can find work for everyone who wishes to help out!!! People with specific skills are always in need and the volunteer form asks you to identify any particular skills you may have. See the volunteer sign-up page to sign up online or for information about obtaining a paper copy of the form. Or you may pick up a sign-up postcard in one of our birdhouse donation boxes in stores and offices around town. All volunteers will be contacted a few weeks prior to the workday.
We welcome volunteers aged 12-112. Unfortunately we cannot allow anyone under 12 to volunteer. Children 12-15 may only work with their parents, while 16-17 year olds may work with written parental permission.
